Rabbit & Small Pet Euthanasia at Home
Kind end of life care for smaller companions.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets and other small companions feel fear very keenly; a trip to a busy clinic full of unfamiliar smells can be the most frightening part of their day. An at home visit means the goodbye happens in the hutch, cage or lap they know, with your family around them, at an unhurried pace.
What the visit looks like
Visits with small pets are gentle, quiet and unhurried; and often shorter than families expect.
- 1
A calm, quiet arrival
The vet arrives quietly and sits down with you first, talking through your pet's history and answering every question before anything else happens. Your rabbit, guinea pig or other small companion can stay exactly where they are most settled: their hutch, cage, run, or a familiar towel on your lap.
- 2
Gentle sedation
A gentle sedative is normally given first while your pet rests in familiar bedding or a towel they know. The vet tailors the approach to your pet’s species and condition, monitors them as they relax, and explains any adjustment needed. The timing varies from pet to pet.
- 3
The peaceful passing
Once your pet is ready, the vet gives the final injection. The vet monitors your pet throughout, aiming to keep their passing as calm and comfortable as possible, and explains what you may notice. Being at home avoids a journey to the practice.
- 4
Unhurried time, and aftercare
You can take as much time as you need to say goodbye. There is never any rush. Once you are ready, the vet will take care of the aftercare arrangements agreed when you booked.
The whole visit happens in the place your pet feels safest; their own hutch, cage or a blanket on your lap and with the people they know around them.
Which pets do you help?
As well as dogs and cats, the vet provides end of life visits for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice.
If your companion isn't listed, just ask; a free phone conversation is the quickest way to find out how we can help.
Small pets hide pain
Rabbits, rodents are prey animals, and their instinct is to hide illness until they can't anymore. Signs are often very subtle; eating less, hiding more, sitting hunched or quiet, or no longer grooming.
If you have noticed changes and are unsure what they mean, call Lucia for a free, no-obligation conversation. There is never any pressure to book.
Aftercare, arranged in advance
So that you can focus entirely on your pet on the day, aftercare is discussed and agreed before the visit. You can choose individual cremation with ashes returned to you in your choice of urn or casket, communal cremation, or burial at home.
See all the options on our aftercare page.
