Cat Euthanasia at Home

A gentle goodbye for your cat, where they feel safest.

For many cats, the carrier, the car journey and the unfamiliar smells of a clinic are far more distressing than anything else that day. An at home visit removes all of it: your cat stays in the room they know, on the chair, lap or sunny spot they have chosen, and the visit happens entirely at their pace.

What the visit looks like

Most home visits with cats are quieter, slower and shorter than people expect. The vet works at your cat's pace.

  1. 1

    Arrival without fuss

The vet arrives calmly and keeps movement and noise to a minimum, letting your cat stay exactly where they have settled: a favourite chair, your lap, a windowsill, or a quiet hiding spot. There is no chase and no handling your cat does not want.

  2. 2

    A gentle sedative

A gentle sedative is normally given first, wherever your cat feels safe and the vet can comfortably reach them. The vet monitors your cat as they relax and explains any adjustment needed for their condition; the timing varies from pet to pet.

  3. 3

    The peaceful passing

Once your cat is deeply relaxed, the vet gives the final injection. The vet monitors your cat throughout, aiming to keep their passing as calm and comfortable as possible.

  4. 4

    Unhurried time, and aftercare

You can take as much time as you need to say goodbye. There is never any rush. Once you are ready, the vet will take care of the aftercare arrangements agreed when you booked.

The visit happens on the chair, bed or sunny spot your cat has chosen, in the room they know best.

Anxious or hiding cats

Cats who disappear under the bed the moment a visitor arrives are part of the reason this service exists. A clinic visit can be overwhelming for a nervous or fractious cat, so the vet takes a patient, gentle approach and works around wherever your cat feels safest.

In most cases the sedative can be given wherever your cat has settled; including under furniture if it is safe to do so; so there is no need to drag them out of their hiding place on an already difficult day.

If you are not sure it is time

Cats instinctively mask pain and illness, which can make this decision feel much harder than it does with other pets. Subtle changes; hiding more, grooming less, eating less, or no longer reaching their favourite spot; are often the only signs.

Aftercare, arranged in advance

So that you can focus entirely on your cat on the day, aftercare is discussed and agreed before the visit. You can choose individual cremation with ashes returned to you in your choice of urn or casket, communal cremation, or burial at home.
