Dog Euthanasia at Home
A peaceful goodbye for your dog, at home.
For older dogs, dogs with arthritis or mobility loss, or any dog for whom travelling has become difficult, an at home visit lets the goodbye happen in the place they feel safest; on their bed, by your feet, or in the garden. No car journey, no waiting room, and no rush: you set the pace at every stage.
What the visit looks like
Most home visits with dogs run for around 45 minutes to an hour. There is no rush, and you set the pace at every stage.
- 1
Arrival and a quiet introduction
The vet arrives at the agreed time and sits down with you and your dog first. The vet explains exactly what will happen, answers every question. The whole family is welcome to be present.
- 2
A gentle sedative
A gentle sedative is normally given first, wherever your dog is comfortable, such as their favourite bed, blanket or your arms. The vet monitors your dog as they relax and explains any adjustment needed for their condition; the timing varies from pet to pet.
- 3
The peaceful passing
Once your dog is completely relaxed and unaware, a final injection is given. There is no pain, just a quiet, dignified passing in the place they know best.
- 4
Unhurried time, and aftercare
You can take as much time as you need to say goodbye. There is never any rush. Once you are ready, the vet will take care of the aftercare arrangements agreed when you booked.
The whole visit happens in the place your dog feels safest; a favourite bed or blanket, by the fire, or in the garden and with the people they know around them.
Large dogs and limited mobility
For a big or elderly dog with arthritis, getting into the car can be difficult. A home visit means no travel and no waiting room. Your dog can stay where they feel most settled.
Home is where your dog feels most at ease. Every smell and sound is familiar, every corner is known, and they are surrounded by the people they love.
If you are not sure it is time
That is one of the most common reasons people phone us. You know your dog better than anyone, and dogs often show us more than we expect: changes in appetite, mobility, breathing, or simply fewer good days than bad ones.
Call Lucia for a free, no-obligation conversation about your dog's quality of life. There is never any pressure to book.
Aftercare, arranged in advance
So that you can focus entirely on your dog on the day, aftercare is discussed and agreed before the visit. You can choose individual cremation with ashes returned to you in your choice of urn or casket, communal cremation, or burial at home.
See all the options on our aftercare page.
